Men who drive or flaunt flashy possessions not the "marrying kind"

Check out this new study that says, men, if you drive fancy cars or flaunt flashy possessions, women do not find you the "marrying kind".  Women are yes attracted, but thats where it ends.  Read the article here and let me know what you think:

Are Men Who Flaunt Flashy Cars Not the 'Marrying Kind?'
EverydayHealth.com

Men who drive Porsches or flaunt other flashy possessions are usually not the "marrying kind," a new study suggests.

Researchers from Rice University, the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA), and the University of Minnesota found that conspicuous spending by men is often driven by the desire to have uncommitted romantic flings. They also pointed out that although flashy spending may get a woman's attention, she won't be picking out china patterns any time soon.

This research suggests that conspicuous products, such as Porsches, can serve the same function for some men that large and brilliant feathers serve for peacocks," study author Jill Sundie, an assistant professor of marketing at UTSA, said in a news release from Rice University.
Just as peacocks flaunt their brightly colored tails to attract potential mates, certain men show off flashy products, like brightly colored sports cars, to draw the attention of women, the study found. The researchers also indicated that the men who pursued this strategy were only interested in short-term sexual relationships with women.
In analyzing more than 1,000 men, researchers revealed that being in possession of a Porsche or another flashy luxury product did make a man more desirable to women than owning a non-luxury item, such as a Honda Civic. The attraction however, ended there.
While women who did find a man who drove a Porsche more attractive as a date, she did not find him more desirable as a marriage partner for a long-term committed relationship, the study authors explained.
In fact, researchers found that women inferred from men's flashy spending that they were only interested in uncommitted sex.

"When women considered him for a long-term relationship, owning the sports car held no advantage relative to owning an economy car," study co-author Daniel Beal, an assistant professor of psychology at Rice University, said in the news release. "People may feel that owning flashy things makes them more attractive as a relationship partner, but in truth, many men might be sending women the wrong message."
The study authors suggested that when it comes to attracting potential dates, women do not share men's conspicuous spending habits.
"Obviously, women also spend plenty of money on expensive things," added Sundie. "But the anticipation of romance doesn't trigger flashy spending as it does with some men."
So, let me know what you think; let's see if we can get opinions from both sides of the field on this one.

RIP Nate Dogg (1969 to 2011)

He was definitely one of the best that ever sang a hook, his classic tones and smooth jazz like feel is a style that everyone fell in love with.  Pretty much anytime any artist put Nate Dogg on a track you know it was going to be a hit.  This passing definitely creates a void in the Hip Hop space that I don't think will ever be filled.  In my opinion, and I'm sure many of yours, there is no one out there today and ever, that will ever come close to sounding and laying down a hook like Nate Dogg.

Here's a video medley thats sure to bring back memories of the late Nathan D. Hale aka Nate Dogg, he only was only 41 years old, R.I.P.

5 Questions with... Roberto Sarjoo [repost]

This was an article last year, but just thought I would give it new life on my blog. It was done by Karim Kanji for TechVibes.ca. A year later and many of the things mentioned in this article are still true.

--------------------

Just like a jolt of caffeine, your Wednesday morning would not be complete without this week's edition of 5 Questions.

Roberto Sarjoo is a marketer at heart and has been working at Putting Edge for over 2 years in the marketing manager position. He is in his second stint with the company, as he worked on the front-lines for the company for 5 years while in high school and college. Roberto claims to be funny (just ask him), a tech geek, and music junkie. He loves being being social, whether in person or online and of course, is a huge Toronto Raptors Fan.

What motivates you to do what you do on a daily basis?

Just for the love of what I do. From the creative aspect, down to the nitty gritty, its what wakes me up in the morning. I love knowing that work that I do impacts hundreds of thousands of people. They see it, they enjoy it!

Do you have any success start-up tips for people wanting to create a name for themselves in your industry?

I believe its all about keep doing what you love, believing in yourself and acting on your thoughts and ideas. No one ever got anywhere without exercising some form of action. Connect with others in the same field and learn from them, whether they are more experienced, or younger, you can always learn something from someone, use your network! And this is something I will always remember; a Canadian millionaire/entrepreneur when asked how he got to where he was today, responded with "I hired people smarter than me". I think its important to use your network and leverage the knowledge of those who are experts in their respective fields to help you accomplish your goals.

In your opinion why is Toronto a great place for cool tech start-ups?

I think it has to do with the people. I have never seen another city that has young people that are willing to help each other out as much as Toronto. We have such a great community of young people here in the city that are willing to work together for the benefit of the end-user. In addition to that, the technology and infrastructure to get projects done is here, we are like an open source city, pretty much anything that you would need done, can be done here.

What's your favourite tech toy and social media site and why?

My favourite tech toy has to be my iPhone. No matter where I go, what I do, i'm always connected and that's important to me. In addition, I feel like there's no limit to what I can do with it. Social Media site has to be Twitter, being able to connect with others on a daily basis is great, and since I've been on Twitter, I can easily say that my network has grown 10 fold from what it used to be and it feels great to be able to connect with so many amazing people.

Who would you say is one of Toronto's up and coming stars in your space and why?

Satish Kanwar (@skanwar as some of you might know). First of all, I really don't think he sleeps. When it comes to Toronto events involving social media or twitter (ex. TwestivalTO) hes almost behind the scenes on everything. His digital experience agency JetCooper is really blowing up, and they have harnessed all the young talent in Toronto. The bigger digital agencies better keep an eye out, these guys are growing fast.

Changes At Flow935 Should Be A Wake Up Call

CTV has started its transformation of radio station Flow 93.5. Gone are Soca Therapy and Riddim Track along with the possibility of some of our fav. radio hosts. However, those directing hate to Flow935, your anger is in the wrong place. Direct it towards parent company CTV. I doubt Flow935 had any choice once CTV came down with the decision. Put the blame where it deserves to be. I'm sure that all Flow935 radio hosts are not happy with this decision. This radio station truly brought multicultural vibe to mainstream radio in the Toronto area.

Caribbean culture influences this city from Caribana to its urban/hip hop scene, sad to see that its not corporately supported. How do you change this? as a culture and a movement, come together and bring positive vibes. If someone is doing something big, don't hate or get jealous, that thinking will take us backwards as a culture and a community. Support your brothers and sisters, improve upon the product and show the world there is value in what we represent, from our music, to food to culture. When we start to do this, then and only then will we be noticed as a movement and picked up by the mainstream in areas outside of the Caribbean.

Let me know your thoughts and what you think about either the changes at Flow 93.5 and/or what it means to be of Caribbean decent in Toronto and/or any other area outside the Caribbean.

UPDATE:
For more information on whats happening at Flow, check out Mark Strong's Blog here:"The New Flow 93.5 Cleaned Out"

[Video] JD Era ft. Lokz - "Fame & Fortune"

This song and video has been out for a few months now, but I just have to give a shoutout to JD Era who has been around for some time but keeps bringing some of the sickest flows in the city.  Take in this track, and I encourage you to start taking more interest in Hip Hop out of Toronto.  Many people wonder "Whatever happened to 'real' hip hop?" but I'll tell you one thing, Toronto continues to bring some of the best real lyricsts and with the development of our producers, some of best beats in the entire industry.  Stand Up Toronto!
